You make home a lovely place

2010 is going by far too quickly, and so far February has proved to be the fun month. After getting back from New York, we got a phone call from my Mum asking how we'd feel about her coming to stay for a week. Of course, how we felt about it was 'the sooner the better.' It turned out that sooner was indeed better, and she landed in Albuquerque a couple of weeks later.

With the small amount of time off I managed to swindle at work, Ryan and I decided to show mum some of the sights of New Mexico. Last time she was here we'd heard about a miraculous Stair Case in a church in Santa Fe. As the legend goes, Nun's at the Loretto Chapel had been praying to St Joseph for a much needed staircase in their Chapel, when an anonymous man arrived to see them. He went on to build a spiral staircase that defied the rules of physics, being somehow suspended without any support. Impossible, no? A miracle just 60 miles from our home. It seemed only natural that we should go and revel in it.

Excitement mounted as we found the chapel. Not accustomed to Priest crafts, we were a little surprised to see that you couldn't enter the Church without a mandatory $4 charge per person. Surprised but not perturbed, we made our way into the Chapel eager to see the miracle waiting for us inside. What would be around the corner? How would it be constructed? Would we be able to use Ryan's scientific brain to solve the mystery that had so long eluded the world?

No need. Apparently it looks a little different today than when the mysterious carpenter built first built It. Somewhere along the line, a big black banister was installed. I noticed as I walked around that the 'no supports' rumour was a bit of a fallacy; in fact, the staircase was bolted to the wall. We were a little disappointed, but did enjoy the stained glass windows a little more than we'd anticipated.

Cool Church; miraculous stair case? Perhaps not.

It was so nice to have mum here, even though she had a lot of sitting around involved for her. Obviously, she'll be my Mum forever and there will always be the motherly advice and help that I'll turn to her for, but there's something nice about growing up and being able to appreciate your parents on a friend level. It was lovely to sit up late and chat with my friend, not just my Mum. Thank goodness she's already looking into flights for the next holiday.
