One of our Christmas presents was a Sleigh Ride at Mount Charleston. We'd secured half price tickets, but that didn't mean that expectations weren't high. Ryan had envisaged sleighs pulled by Clydesdales, decked in full garb. Rich velvety blankets would be draped across our legs, and we would glide across the snow to the tinkling of sleigh bells. (We may have been hoping to relive a Gilmore girls episode) When we arrived, it didn't take Ryan long to realise that real life isn't quite Stars Hollow. His face pretty much says it all:
Instead of sleighs there were wagons. Instead of Clydesdale horses there were donkeys. Instead of comfortable seats, there were bales of hay. It wasn't exactly all Ryan's dreams were made of, but it still turned out to be pretty magical. Charlotte loved the donkeys, and it turned out that some of the wagons were pulled by horses after all. She 'woofed' at the animals. She knows that cats say meow, and sheep say baa, but as for everything else, as far as Charlotte's concerned, they all say woof.
We ended up getting a treat. As the huge hay bale lined wagon moved off with the party ahead of us, a pretty white horse drawn carriage appeared to take it's place; it was much more like what we'd had in mind, even if our knees did bump with the couple we had to share it with.
Next year, we're hoping for more snow so we can live the true sleigh ride dream. But, for now a horse drawn carriage certainly did the trick. It was a fun family adventure, and even if our driver did talk a little about the toilet habits of the horses, I dare say it was a tad romantic.
