Ryan has a thing for fancy sparkling fruit juice. There's something about the glass bottle that it comes in that makes it so much more appealing to him. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthday dinners are never complete unless Ryan has filled the fridge door with every flavour imaginable. A few weeks ago while we were doing our weekly shop at the Supermarket, Ryan spied a new flavour, blood orange, that he simply had to try. But, with no national holidays or birthdays around the corner, the Shloer look-a-like bottle was sitting in our fridge, chilling, waiting for a day when we'd have an excuse to crack it open. Well, last Wednesday that day finally arrived.
Ryan came home from work and walked into our bedroom, where I was reading, carrying the bottle of Sparkling Orange Juice. He was grinning from ear to ear, which really isn't that unusual but this time there was a little more excitement behind his smile.
"We're celebrating," he said simply. He sat down next to me and looked at me, smiling contentedly.
Intrigued, I closed my book. "And what are we celebrating?" I questioned.
Ryan simply smiled and shrugged. "My awesome-ness."
He instructed me that we were going out; his Dad was taking us out for dinner. Something was definitely going on. Being treated to dinner is reserved for weddings and graduations, not any old Wednesday evening in May.
"Whats going on?" Ryan handed me a glass of the Sparkling Orange juice and coolly sipped his own. "I got some good news today," he mused.
I finally put two and two together. Pregnancy is making me a little slower. "You got in?! Are you going to be a Dentist?"
It turned out that he'd received a phone call from the University of Las Vegas earlier in the afternoon. Three of his future Professors had been on the line to tell him that they were offering him a place and they'd see him in August for orientation.
The news hasn't really sunk in yet. My mind is slowly adjusting to the idea of moving at 28 weeks pregnant amidst 110 degree heat, but we're excited for the adventure that lies ahead. Ryan is already enjoying spreading the news. In his Priesthood meeting at Church, he announced to the men in our Ward that four years from now, they could call him 'Brother Dr." And there I was thinking that the reason that he didn't find out until May was to keep him humble...
