At Red Rock Canyon there is a children's discovery trail. It's consists of a flat, even, clearly marked path, which is conveniently free from boulders, potholes, or anything else that could pose a potential tripping hazard to the children making use of said trail. The pathway is lined with boulders and a carefully chosen plant selection for the children's viewing pleasure. It all sounds lovely, but when we took Charlotte for a Sunday afternoon stroll along the discovery trail, here's what we discovered: it's really boring!
So, after watching Charlotte run a few sprints up and down the path in sheer excitement at finding herself in the great wide open, we meandered off the beaten track and set off in search of adventure.
We didn't have to go far before we came across a big rock to climb. Charlotte surprised us with how quickly she could race to the top, and how adept she was at scooting her way back down.
It took a long time for the novelty of the rock to wear off, but when it did there were trees to climb, crunchy autumn leaves to discover, and dry river beds to scramble across. That's the beauty of being a toddler I suppose- everywhere you walk is a discovery trail.
And every activity proves to be a photo opportunity; what's an afternoon of climbing without a split pair of leggings to show for your efforts?
